Five lives were recently saved because of a lone carbon monoxide detector in a Ralston home. According to Fire Chief Kyle Ienn, shortly after 10:20 p.m., the Ralston Fire Department received a call concerning a possible natural gas leak in a home on State Street. What firefighters found, however, were high levels of carbon monoxide.

A deadline is nearing for most homes in Massachusetts to be equipped with carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. As of March 31, all residences that use fossil fuel/oil, gas, wood or coal in their heating systems, or have enclosed parking, will be required to have at least one CO detector on every floor.

Officials with the Denver Fire Department say cooperative efforts with local alarm companies and other businesses have resulted in a 17-percent reduction in false fire alarms caused by life-safety systems since 2001. Fire officials add they are against punitive measures, such as false alarm fees, for those whose systems cause false dispatches.

Tyco is considering a corporate break-up that would involve spinning off its health care and electronics businesses while retaining a stripped-down company that includes only its security, fire, and valve and pumps businesses. The Wall Street Journal says Tyco's board will vote sometime within the next week on the proposal being offered by CEO Ed Breen.

A mining accident tragedy in West Virginia is bringing new public awareness to two words heard often among life-safety systems installers: carbon monoxide (CO). An explosion inside the Sago Mine in Tallmansville, W. Va., on Jan. 2 left 13 miners trapped 260 feet below the surface. Two days later, only one of the miners was pulled out alive with all the others dying of CO poisoning.
