Electronic security and life safety system installer Security Networks LLC has acquired Marlin Central Monitoring of Kissimmee, Fla., for undisclosed terms. Marlin will continue to operate with the same staff and in the same facility, and will continue to use the Marlin Central Monitoring name.

Honeywell has announced its intention to acquire Zellweger Analytics, a global leader in hazardous gas detection technology. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2005. Acquisition terms were not disclosed.

Electronic Control Systems' president Geoffrey Winters recently presented a Pawtucket, R.I., elementary school with a carbon monoxide detection system from UltraGuard. The school is the second in the state to receive a donated system. An East Greenwich school had an UltraGuard system installed last year.

If The American Health Care Association (AHCA) has its way, every nursing home in the United States will be equipped with a fully monitored sprinkler system. AHCA recently encouraged the Congress to consider the Nursing Fire Safety Act legislation that Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) introduced to the 108 Congress.

Come New Year's Day, carbon monoxide detectors will not only be a good idea for homes in Alaska, it will be law. A law passed by Alaska's state legislature earlier this year will go into effect on Jan. 1 that will require a CO detector in just about every residence in the state.

A new law that requires carbon monoxide detectors in all residences in New York City is expected to be a windfall for the alarm industry. As of Nov. 1, there must be a CO detection device within 15 feet of anywhere someone would sleep in homes and apartments in all five boroughs of the Big Apple. That has brought on a rush of requests for CO equipment among New York homeowners and apartment building owners, who will be entitled to a $25 per tenant reimbursement for the devices.

New York City's new law will mandate the installation of at least one carbon monoxide (CO) alarm within 15 feet of sleeping areas. The new law has fire system manufacturer Kidde teaming up with Lowe's stores to educate customers about CO. The stores also sell and manufacture CO alarms.

The state of Maine has adopted new fire and building codes developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The 2003 editions of NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code (UFC); NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; and the new NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code all went into effect earlier this year.

The North Maine Fire Protection District located northwest of Chicago has adopted new fire codes from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The district serves approximately 30,000 suburban residents in unincorporated Cook County in Maine Township.

Citizens of Tennessee and Puerto Rico are now protected by the most current editions of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) safety codes, the NFPA announced. Tennessee recently adopted NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code (UFC), as did Puerto Rico, which also adopted NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.

Alabama nursing homes must have installed full sprinkler systems by 2007, the State Committee of Public Health has ruled in an amendment to an existing national safety code. The Life Safety Code currently regulates state and federal sprinkler systems but allows various facilities to operate without the systems.

The Fire Department of New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has tipped its helmets to Honeywell's Fire Systems Group. The department's Fire Safety Education Fund has named Honeywell one of the recipients of the annual FDNY Fire Commissioner's Humanitarian Awards.

GE Security is voluntarily recalling some of its carbon monoxide (CO) detectors because of a software problem that makes them ineffective after a year. The recall affects 74,000 ESL SafeAir 240-COE CO alarms manufactured between November 2000 and August 2002.

Newly built homes or existing homes being sold in the state beginning March 6 will need to have at least one functioning carbon monoxide alarm. The Buffalo News reported that the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council put the regulations into effect more quickly than planned due to the at least 11 people in the state who died from accidental carbon monoxide poisonings since last October.
