CCTV is not new as an electronic product or service. Though like all electronic equipment, this product continues to develop technologically, offering ever-better clarity, data transmission and reliability to prove its usefulness. The choice of products is staggering and the service options are expanding in ways that can complicate legal implications.

Where not to install CCTV is often the difficult question, rather than where should it be installed. How about in doctor's offices? My answer has been, sure, install it, just make sure its not hidden and not focused in such a way to invade expected privacy.

I received an E-mail blast from a CCTV manufacturer today describing a new five-point plan aimed to overhaul its technical support and customer service. Four of the five points were in line with expectations for a high-end company in the electronic security industry, but I suspect that the bulk of the objections the manufacturer hears will come from just one of the points it mentions.

There was a day when I was not so keen on the use of video surveillance in public areas. Today, I believe that public cameras serve a valuable service in specific instances, especially in locations known for high-crime against people and their property. With that said, I believe when this tactic is used in any community, it should be carefully orchestrated and monitored by a public/private sector commission made up of members of the public, police department and community leaders. Only someone living under a rock the past couple of years would not have noticed the increased activity in modern security CCTV applications. I would go so far to say that the progress of security video is, or shortly will be, evolutionary in the security industry.

HDcctv Alliance, an industry group that launched in June, says it will make its proposed high definition video surveillance standard (HDcctv Interoperability Specification 1.0) publicly available in September. The gist of the consortium is to offer the marketplace a cheaper alternative to IP megapixel cameras. Todd Rockoff, chairman of the HDcctv Alliance, offers further insight.

There is nothing more frustrating than having a video surveillance system capture footage of an incident, only to find that the images are unusable due them being too dark, too light or having too much glare. When this occurs, the culprits are most often the lighting, the wrong type of camera being deployed or the improper placement of a camera.
