NFPA Division Manager for Building and Life Safety Codes Robert Solomon discusses what's in store for the fire/life-safety market in SSI's 2012 Industry Forecast.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has appointed two regional electrical code specialists. NFPA also recently hired a western regional sprinkler specialist.

While codes go into great detail about how to ensure fire and life-safety systems perform as intended, making sure the systems operate in concert with each other remains a work in progress. Integrated testing is a means to bridge existing gaps and maximize systems’ ability to mitigate loss of property and life.

Determining fire alarm priorities when elevator emergency phones are involved illustrates the need to sometimes fill in the blanks when situations fall outside the realm of existing codes. Having a third phone line or simply leaving it up to an AHJ are two potential solutions.
