The 2011 Installation Business Report tabulations are based on responses from all levels of operators of small, independent dealers to large, national mass marketers. When possible and where relevant, results have been provided according to large (annual revenues in excess of $10 million), midsize ($1 million to $9.99 million) and small (less than $1 million) companies. More than 400 electronic security contractors participated in the survey.

Market Statistics — Revenue Sources & Market Size

Installing companies' actual 2010 numbers ended up well below projections - flipping what had been an average $300,000 rise to a $2.4 million deficit. The good news though, is operators anticipated a $400,000, or slightly 3-percent, rebound for 2011.

Installation Company Statistics — Security Operator Profile by Size

Despite the tough economy, installing security contractors anticipated about 3-percent revenue growth ($12.2 million to $12.6 million) in 2011. The greatest gain is seen at the low end of the market, where small security companies projected an average revenue jump of nearly 36 percent ($134,000). Companies on the high end of the marketplace forecasted a much more conservative bump of less than 2-percent, while those in the middle expected things to improve nearly a 24-percent clip.

Installation Company Statistics — Revenues, Experience & Account Bases

There was a substantial increase in more established companies as 21 years or more in business rose 7 percentage points. Even beyond that, those with 41 years or more of company lifetimes grew by 5 points. Small companies tend to be younger, with 36 percent in the 1-10 range, while large firms exceed 50 years 40 percent of the time.

False Alarm Statistics

Problems with entering and exiting buildings continue to trigger the most false alarms, however, they decreased their prominence in 2011 by 6 percentage points. Issues with arming slid 5 points and disarming 1 point. Considering the tumultuous and extreme weather that wreaked havoc with so many Americans during the period it should not be too surprising that weather-related false alarms jumped 7 points.

Crime Statistics

The estimated number of roberries in 2010 decreased 9.7 percent from the 2009 data. Roughly $456 million in losses were attributed to robberies in 2010. The average dollar value of property stolen per reported robbery was $1,239.

Access Control Statistics — Installations & Revenue Sources

The average number of access control projects held firm for the third year in succession at 60 installations. More than three fourths (76 percent) of installing security contractors only install 1-4 access control systems per month, and nearly nine in 10 (86 percent) install fewer than 10 each month. Large companies ($10 million or more in annual revenues) are putting in an average of 168 access systems on an annual basis compared to just 120 two years ago.

Video Surveillance Statistics — Installations, Prices & Market Trends

The average number of video surveillance installations per dealer/ integrator ended a four-year pattern of decline that began with an all-time high in 2007. Companies are averaging a dozen more projects on an annual basis, bring the business back in line with where it was in 2009. The averages according to company size are 216 for large, and 84 for both midsize and small operators. Large companies actually experienced a decrease in this business of 36 projects. On average, 54 percent of these jobs are new installations as opposed to upgrades.

Intrusion Statistics — Typical Systems & Installations

Business in this market dropped off by 7 percent, from 180 in 2010 back to 2009 levels. A troubling trend has seen the number of these projects lose ground six of the past eight years. The 168 average is less than half of what it was in just four years ago (pre-recession) and matches the lowest point in more than 10 years. This market has plummeted 79 percent since its peak in 2003. Overall, 80 percent of all installing companies install on average fewer than 20 intrusion alarm systems per month. Small companies (annual revenues less than $1 million) average 108 projects per year.

Fire Statistics — Installations, Profits & Damage

For the sixth time in nine years the average number of fire alarm systems being installed by dealers/integrators fell off. Significant shifts were seen in the most common types of fire system projects. Residential (23 percent of projects) added another 3 percentage points to the 7 it seized a year ago to overtake office buildings atop the list. Retail/Entertainment also saw substantial gains with a 4-point increase in market share. But industrial manufacturing took it on the chin with a 4-point slide. In total, 54 percent of security dealers/integrators install fire/life-safety systems.

Residential Statistics — Installations, System Penetration & Applications

For the second year in succession the residential market notched increases in monthly installations across the board. Large companies ($10 million or more per year in revenues) improved by a whopping 106 projects, or 88 percent; midsize (revenues between $1 million and $9.9 million) by seven projects, or 32 percent; small (revenues less than $1 million) by three projects, or 19 percent. Some of the upswing may be attributable to consolidation, particularly involving large companies such as ADT and Stanley.

Commercial/Industrial Statistics — Projects, Monitoring & Attrition

All sized companies averaged more commercial installations per month compared to the prior period. Providers with $10 million or more in annual revenues increased their average monthly workload by 29 projects, or 18 percent. Midsize firms took in six more jobs, or 25 percent, and small operators registered three additional for a 20-percent increase. Some of these hikes may be influenced by company consolidation, particularly national firms such as ADT and Stanley.
