UNION, N.J. — Security dealers who attended Affiliated Monitoring’s recent Security Summit 2013 arrived with no confusion about the subject matter they would be focusing on. The title of the annual event said it all: Earn More Money With Video.
The Dec. 3 conference, hosted at Affiliated Monitoring’s headquarters offered themed sessions that included, “Video RMR Success Stories”; “Make the Transition to IP Video”; an Interactive Services Industry Roundtable; plus, “Ask the Lawyer,” with Carl Tannenbaum of Kleinbard, Bell and Brecker discussing important legal questions impacting dealer businesses.
In his introduction, Affiliated Monitoring President Stanley Oppenheim discussed the state of the security industry and expressed this is “the most exciting time” for installing security contractors. Here are some takeaways from his address:
- Dealers can sell more recurring revenue services than ever before thanks to Internet-based technology advances that are providing broadband into the home and businesses.
- More than 1 million POTS lines are disappearing every year; therefore, dealers have to be proactive to continue to grow their businesses by providing new alarm-signal pathways.
- In order to maintain and grow their customer bases, security dealers need to offer similar interactive/lifestyle services that are being heavily marketed by telcom/cablecom entrants.
The monitoring firm also used the event as a stage to introduce its new video monitoring solution, InView. Daniel Oppenheim, Affiliated’s vice president, introduced the new platform, which will provide the firm the capability to offer its dealer clients to sell video verified alarm services. InView works with DVRs and NVRs from a number of manufacturers, as well as directly with IP cameras. The platform provides dealers the capability to transition their businesses to now become “security solutions” companies and “add stickiness” to their client base by offering video verified alarms, thus increasing RMR.
Oppenheim explained that InView transmits video clips from the DVR, NVR or IP camera to the central station operator who now has more information to speak to the customer about. Clips can also be sent to the end user via a text message or E-mail for verification purposes.
Featured panel guests included Larry Folsom, president of Las Vegas-based American Video & Security and CEO of I-View Now; Deanna Blair of Videofied; Colin Murray of Alarm.com; Gordon Hope, general manager of Honeywell’s AlarmNet; and Ryan Wallace of Telguard. Each panelist offered examples of what their respective companies are doing to leverage technology in order to provide new streams of recurring revenue for dealers.
