ASIS 2016: Axis’ New Speed Dome Outfitted With Laser Technology for Fast Focusing

The AXIS Q6155-E is planned to be available in Q4 2016 through Axis’ standard distribution channels.

ORLANDO, Fla. – As Axis Communications Product Manager Kent Fransson tells the story, the company for several years had envisioned a robust network pan/tilt/zoom (p/t/z) camera that would incorporate a laser, allowing it to focus much faster and with greater accuracy.

The idea became a reality when the company hired a PhD with expertise in laser technology. Viola! Enter the AXIS Q6155-E, which was introduced at ASIS 2016. As Fransson explained, autofocus is among the bigger challenges for a conventional p/t/z camera. The Q6155-E provides security professionals the ability to address that challenge while reaping added features that users will find beneficial in various use cases.

The Q6155-E features Sharpdome, a technology which allows for monitoring of objects as much as 20° above the camera horizon, and provides 1080p resolution and 30x optical zoom. The camera is especially useful in challenging weather or lighting conditions due to its laser focus, along with a new and improved sensor, Axis’ Lightfinder technology and Axis’ Speed Dry function.

The Q6155-E, Fransson said, is well-suited for city and perimeter surveillance, critical infrastructure, transportation, education, industrial and government installations.

“I have not officially confirmed yet, but we believe this is the first video surveillance camera in the industry to ever incorporate laser technology,” he said.
