ASIS 2016 to Be Accompanied by Inaugural ‘Security Week’ Goings-On

Securty Week will be a component of the annual seminar moving forward, providing host communities with expertise on emergency planning, safety and security, ASIS Int’l says.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Attendees traveling here to the 62nd annual ASIS Int’l Seminar and Exhibits will have added activities to consider this year beyond the usual slate of educational sessions and an exhibition floor with 500+ participating manufacturers and service providers.

ASIS Int’l has joined with the Department of Homeland Security Office of Infrastructure Protection to present the first ever Security Week, a series of community preparedness and educational events designed to educate small business owners, community leaders and others about the importance of security and preparedness.

The initiative will be a valuable component of the annual seminar moving forward, providing host communities with expertise on emergency planning, safety and security, explains ASIS Int’l CEO Peter O’Neil.

“Security Week was created to help prevent the violent attacks being carried out in places where people seek to go about their lives in a peaceful manner,” O’Neil says. “ASIS Int’l brings together thousands of security management leaders and experts, and now we look to extend this expertise to our seminar host cities to ensure these communities are stronger and more resilient.”

Security Week will commence with a free Preparedness and Prevention Seminar at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando. Kevin Doss, CEO of Level 4 Security, and author of “Active Shooter: Preparing for and Responding to a Growing Threat,” will moderate the event. Attendees will receive passes to attend free educational sessions presented in the exhibit hall, Sept 12-14, during the annual seminar. ASIS 2016, held at the Orange County Convention Center, will kick off with an opening ceremony Sept. 12 (7:45-9 a.m.). O’Neil will be joined by ASIS President David C. Davis to deliver insights on professional trends, technological developments and skillsets required to succeed in the current and future environment.

Keynote addresses are a highlight of each Seminar and Exhibits. Here are your options: Journalist Ted Koppel (Sept. 13); Elliott Abrams will discuss the many adversaries the U.S. faces in the Middle East and in the Islamic world (Sept. 14); and Beck Weathers, a survivor of the 1996 Mount Everest tragedy and inspiration for the motion picture, “Everest” (Sept. 15).

And here’s an educational programming note for installing security contractors: This year the Systems Integrator Series will be moved to the Integrator Theater on the exhibit floor. The series is part of the free Show+ Pass registration promotion.
