Atlanta Installs Enhanced Camera System to Increase Public Safety

The Mayor of Atlanta says new surveillance cameras can show what a person is wearing from 200 feet away.

ATLANTA – During a news conference inside of the city’s video integration center, Mayor Kasim Reed showed off the enhanced camera system installed around the city.

The Mayor says the technology is the best in the world.

If a citizen’s car breaks down on the highway and there is no emergency responder in sight, the camera system will be able to spot them.

Authorities emphasize that the cameras will be useful for monitoring road conditions during dangerous weather events.

“It is paramount for us to be able to communicate to our citizens about what the actual conditions of the road are,” says Director of Emergency Preparedness Ria Aiken. “Our ability to be able to do so will enable us to give clear communication as it relates to safety.”

While there are currently more than 7,600 private and government cameras in the city, the mayor hopes to increase that total to 10,000 by the time he leaves office this time next year.
