Axis to Provide Network Cameras for the Oscars

For the third year, Axis will lend LAPD its video surveillance technology for the Academy Awards.

CHELMSFORD, Mass. – Axis Communications will once again provide the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) with video security and live situational awareness for the Academy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 22).

Several of Axis’s network cameras will be strategically placed in and around Hollywood’s Dolby Theater,  including the red carpet area. The images will be transferred to the police station’s command center so that officers there can relay information to those stationed at the event, James Marcella, director of technical services at Axis, told Boston Business Journal.

“The Oscars is temporary in nature, and these cameras aren’t placed there year-round,” Marcella said. “So, they need a technology that can be deployed quickly and can interface through wireless technology back to the command center.”

Axis has been providing video security for the Oscars for at least three years, Marcella said. The event is one of the most challenging from a security perspective, he said.

That’s because certain colors – like the bright hue of the red carpet – are hard for cameras to render, and flashes from light bulbs on cameras change the lighting in the video transmission feeds dramatically. Axis’s technology balances out the colors on video so they are true to life, Marcella told Boston Business Journal.

“In the surveillance world, being able to transmit live video across 10 miles to a command center, and to do that providing situational awareness and proper color rendition, is very important,” he said.
