Borough in Pa. Gets Go-Ahead for Security Camera Network Upgrade

Funds to pay for the system overhaul largely came from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant.

CARLISLE, Pa. – City officials here have approved five security upgrades to the police department’s camera system, which will be performed by Cam-Tek Systems, a local security provider.

The upgrades will include replacing an existing server used to store security camera footage with a 21TB recording server, according to The Sentinel. Other improvements include replacing the current backhaul system with a 24 GHZ Airfiber Bridge; replacing a broken security camera at an area park with an Axis Communications pan/tilt/zoom (p/t/z) model; and the purchase of six security cameras to be installed at a parking garage.

The upgrades were paid for mostly by $27,000 out of a total $37,000 of funds allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant. The city council will amend its 2015-’16 budget to include $5,458 to purchase two Drop cameras, mobile cameras that can be placed at various spots throughout the borough, according to the newspaper.

The remaining $10,000 will be allocated to an activity involving Project SHARE.

“These surveillance cameras have proved a necessary tool for our officers,” Mayor Tim Scott told the newspaper. “They create strong evidence for convictions and can also aid in the protection of our officers themselves.”
