Bozeman Says Cybersecurity to Affect All Industry Segments During 2015

PSA Security Network President and CEO Bill Bozeman covers the issues most affecting the overall security industry and more.

The January edition of SSI includes our annual industry forecast as a cornerstone of our special 2015 Industry Forecast Issue. For the piece, I interviewed more than 20 of the industry’s most knowledgeable market analysts, business experts, security dealers, systems integrators, supplier representatives and trade association directors. Some of their perspectives can be found in the magazine article, with the balance of their assessments appearing in separate blog posts.

Featured in this installment: Bill Bozeman, president & CEO, PSA Security Network

What are some of the major security technology and market developments you see for 2015?

Bill Bozeman: Faster, better, cheaper and easier will drive security technology to the next level of integration. Mobile technology will continue to proliferate and the “user experience” will drive innovation around business process management and accessibility. Video surveillance, access control and the surrounding support products will continue to merge to a more unified platform. Unifying formerly unrelated or redundant, manual tasks into a more streamlined business process via embedded intelligence and analytics. A more customer- and integrator-friendly platform will open up new sales opportunities. All segments of the security market will be impacted by cybersecurity issues. Manufacturers, software developers and security integrators will all be under pressure to provide cyber-hardened products and services.

What issues do you see most affecting the overall security industry?

Bozeman: The unbounded nature of the security perimeter, with the continuing advancement of mobile and cloud-based computing and process, creates the need for a more comprehensive approach to securing the perimeter. After 10 years of visionary convergence talk, hardening both logical and physical security with next generation technology is now a necessity.

What type of year in 2015 are you anticipating for PSA member companies?

Bozeman: We anticipate a 4-8% growth for integrators who are IP savvy and focus on being best to do business with. Integrators who continue on the traditional path will be flat to down.

What are some pressing security industry issues you expect to remain unresolved?

Bozeman: The lack of standards continues to be an issue. Standards help advance the adoption of new technology and establish best practices which inform corporate security program development. Standards influence manufacturing direction to drive safety, security and open platforms to better serve the consumer. Technology solutions poised to meet the increasing threat of cybersecurity meltdowns will be forced to take a path of unrelenting evolution.

What is something that might surprise security professionals in 2015?

Bozeman: On the enterprise market, the manufacturers will become more involved with the end users as the end user customers want the security of having a relationship with other software and hardware developers.

The security integrator will not go away; they will just have a different role, including strategic partnerships and joint ventures. Integrators will see an increasing percentage of their profits come from services versus the more traditional profit received from the sale of hardware. This will change the dynamics of our industry. Anytime you have such an occurrence, you have a shake out; some will prosper under the new environment while others who refuse to adapt will slowly and painfully fall away.

Manufactures will be impacted by a rapidly growing DIY market. Our next generation is more comfortable and more competent with technology than ever before, leading to a strong DIY security market.
