Crywolf False Alarm Solutions Chosen to Run New Orleans Police Department False Alarm Program

Higher fines, suspended police response among changes in new program.

Crywolf False Alarm Solutions will manage the New Orleans Police Department’s new false alarm program, The Times-Picayune reported on Monday.

The new program will feature higher fines and suspended police response after the fourth false burglary alarm call. The previous program suspended response after the 10th false alarm. False-alarm tallies reset each year.

Crywolf False Alarm Solutions, based in Waldorf, Md., is expected to start building its system to administer the program by next month, with the launch date expected by the end of the year.

“This effort brings the NOPD in-line with departments across the country that are using technology to reduce wasted time in the field and focus resources on responding to actual crimes and proactive patrol,” NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said in a statement.

The fines are as follows:

  • Written warning for the first false alarm
  • $75 for second false alarm
  • $150 for third and fourth false alarm
  • Police will stop responding after the fourth false alarm

Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux released a report last year that found 98.8% of burglary alarms in the city turn out to be false. Burglary alarms make up roughly 11% of the NOPD’s service calls.
