Disney, Universal, SeaWorld Adding Metal Detectors to Entrances for Holidays

The three theme park operators join Six Flags as the only chains to add metal detectors as part of their entry process.

As it turns out, even the most magical of places are not immune to growing security concerns.

Disney, Universal and SeaWorld installed metal detectors outside of their gates on Thursday for the holidays, something they’ve experimented with in the past but never on a large scale, according to the New York Times.

Disney will likely make the metal detectors permanent but will start by screening guests randomly. Meanwhile, Universal described the security measures as “a test.”

“This is a natural progression for us as we study the best security practices for today’s world,” Universal Spokesman Tom Schroder told the Times in an email.

SeaWorld released the following statement: “The safety of our guests and team members, along with the welfare of our animals, have always been our top priority.”

Prior to Thursday, Six Flags was the only theme park chain equipped with metal detectors at entrances. Other theme parks stayed away from metal detectors so as not to detract from the fun atmosphere.

Disney also stopped selling toy guns at its parks so as not to be mistaken for a real firearm. Disney released the following statement on the metal detector decision: “We continually review our comprehensive approach to security and are implementing additional security measures, as appropriate.”
