When I first started working for SECURITY SALES & INTEGRATION, I remember someone telling me that if you’re in the electronic security industry, you’re in the business of saving lives. Sometimes that means boldly stepping out of your comfort zone to help those in need, which is what one door-to-door fire alarm sales representative in Texas did.
On March 2, Corey Anderson of Tucson, Ariz.-based Capital Connect was selling fire systems in a Garland, Texas, neighborhood when he heard screaming and saw flames coming from a home, according to NBC DFW.
Without hesitation, Anderson started kicking in a window to rescue 18-year-old KaeRiel Evans, who has Down syndrome. Evans, who shares the home with her mother and four siblings, was alone in the house watching television. After Anderson removed her from the house, Evans was taken to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns, NY Daily News reports.
The best part about this story to me — other than the fact that a life was saved — is that the humble salesman doesn’t even consider himself to be a hero; rather, he just did what he hoped someone would do for him and his family. If you want to see Anderson discuss this incident, click here.
As I read this story, a few things popped into my mind about those sales teams that sell door to door. One, it is so important to be observant and aware of your surroundings when out in the field. I also realized that it can’t hurt to learn some sort of life-saving skills, such as CPR or take a rescue training course. Anything can happen, as we can see from this story.
