Eagle Eye Networks Makes Debut in VMS Market

AUSTIN, Texas — Eagle Eye Networks, a provider of an on-demand security and operations video management system (VMS), launched this week with the debut of its flagship product, the Eagle Eye security camera VMS.

Eagle Eye Networks Founder Dean Drako describes his solution as the “first on-demand, cloud-based security and operations VMS.” The product offers access to live and recorded video, provides comprehensive mobile applications, and consolidates multiple sites into a single view on a Web browser.

Drako is no stranger to starting a technology business, as he founded Barracuda Networks in 2003. At the firm, Drako developed the first spam filter appliance and grew his company to be an IT security industry leader for mid-market businesses, with more than $200 million in annual sales and 150,000 customers.

Though successful with Barracuda Networks, Drako decided to try his hand at developing video surveillance equipment as he found the current products on the market to be confusing and frustrating to install.

“I was just disappointed with what I found in the marketplace,” Drako tells SSI. “There was so much difficulty in installing and configuring a system, and then getting remote access. There are a lot of things to do to make it work. If I did get it working, it was hard to find the video that I was looking for. And every camera was different. I felt like I was putting together a Frankenstein.”

Although cloud-based solutions are not a new concept in the security industry, Drako believes his product differs from others in the market because it doesn’t require any reconfiguration or product replacement should a camera or DVR fail to record.

“One of the issues I had is that every time something broke in my camera system, I had to reconfigure everything again and I didn’t remember how to do it,” he explains.

Of course, not everyone is completely thrilled when they hear the words “cloud-based management.” After all, the security industry is enormously hardware-based and recent studies, such as the Cisco 2014 Annual Security Report, note that many organizations are susceptible to cyberattacks than ever before. Fortunately, with Drako’s strong IT security background, he took all of those concerns into consideration when creating the Eagle Eye security camera VMS.

For example, Drako observes that the majority of cameras on the market provide raw, unencrypted video streams. His latest solution features the manufacturer’s complete privacy encryption technology, which fully encrypts video during transmission to prevent evidence tampering.

“I’ve spent 10 years basically fighting hackers,” Drako explains. “I know maybe 99.99% of tricks in the book and how to make things very secure.”

With the Eagle Eye Cloud-Premise Flex Storage, users have the option of storing video entirely in the cloud, on premise or in any combination making it difficult for anyone to destroy video footage onsite. Drako also maintains that the storage technology provides a consistent user interface regardless of where the video is stored.

Unquestionably cloud-based systems face challenges with bandwidth consumption. So, Drako developed the multi-layered Intelligent Bandwidth Management technology that allows the system to work with both small and large camera installations without requiring additional bandwidth.

The system, compatible with most ONVIF-compliant IP cameras and analog cameras, allows customers to adjust the number of cameras without having to purchase additional hardware or manage hard disks, according to Drako.

Prior to introducing the Eagle Eye security camera VMS to the market, Drako pilot-tested the solution at with a large variety of customers, spanning large and small businesses, retail, commercial, residential, and mixed use communities.

Royal Security Services, a security system integrator based in Saylorsburg, Pa., served as one of the organizations that tested the new solution.

“We’ve deployed the Eagle Eye Security Camera VMS at three locations recently,” Royal Security Services President David Manento says. “Eagle Eye was extremely easy to implement, even for our installers who were experts on analog cameras rather than IP cameras. Their digital IP camera system was just plug-and-play – we didn’t have to do any routing configuration. The images are great and it just works. The playback is always there when we need it. We manage video monitoring for our customers, and this level of reliability is critical.”

Drako says Eagle Eye Networks will only sell its products through authorized resellers, with Drako describing the company as “100% channel, 100% of the time.” The firm plans to release more information on its channel partner program in the coming months.
