Editor’s Journal: Ambling Around ASIS 2015

SSI’s Editor-in-Chief provides a firsthand account of the booths, people and products experienced during the first day of ASIS Anaheim.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The 61st ASIS Seminar and Exhibits held Sept. 28-30 here could be classified as a modest success for most of its participants, especially attendees. Traffic on the show floor ranged from barren (Days 1 and 3) to moderate (Day 2), and the 600 or so booths were about a 40% decline from what this event presented at its zenith. This made it easy most of the time for show-goers (including SSI’s ever-roaming editors) to get around and into booths as well as gain face time with vendor staff, but left the majority of exhibitors (particularly those focused on the dealer/integrator channel) dismayed.

Per usual for the ASIS show (as opposed to spring’s ISC West), not a tremendous amount of new or especially innovative products were launched during the proceedings but rather more common tweaks to existing offerings or additions to legacy product lines. Among the most prevalent technology themes was the continuing progression of 4K video; HD over coax solutions; deeper integrations and vendor partnerships; design enhancements to enable easier installation, use and remote servicing; various video imaging improvements especially night vision and low light performance; pricing drops and relaxed licensing fees; deeper integrations among video, access control and intrusion; the push toward analyzing system data for both predictive security and business intelligence; and overall higher connectivity among products, systems and mobile devices.

What follows is SSI Editor-in-Chief Scott Goldfine’s Day 1 highlights of nine companies he spoke with. (Note these summaries are based on prearranged daily schedules and do not necessarily reflect all the newest or unusual offerings displayed on the show floor.)

The SSI staff made its rounds through the floors of Anaheim Convention Center.

1. VCA Technology – David Stanfield explained how in recent years this U.K.-based company has achieved significant success promoting its analytics as an OEM edge-based solution that can be incorporated into other manufacturers’ IP cameras and devices. Some 250,000 video channels worldwide are using the company’s analytics. He credited that to popularity to its ease of use and accuracy. And now VCA has launched its own brand of IP network devices and software to the U.S. integrator market.

2. Boon Edam – Tracie Thomas discussed the company’s range of security entrance solutions, including the latest optical turnstiles, full height turnstiles, security doors and portals. She revealed that the firm’s manufacturing will be featured on an upcoming episode of Discovery Channel’s “How It’s Made.” Filmed at Boon Edam’s Lillington, N.C., manufacturing facility, the show is scheduled to air spring 2016.

3. Video Insight – Cofounder and CTO James Whitcomb talked about how the new version of the company’s VMS comes bundled with MonitorCast, an enterprise access control application designed for the education market. He said the firm, now owned by Panasonic, spent two years perfecting the Mercury-based solution and that the integration is very tight and seamless. He explained how key it was for them to design offerings with distinctly different functionality for elementary, middle school and high school applications. He also shared that every Panasonic camera now comes with a free Video Insight license.
