Editor’s Journal: Ambling Around ASIS 2015

SSI’s Editor-in-Chief provides a firsthand account of the booths, people and products experienced during the first day of ASIS Anaheim.

Wendi Burke stands in front of 3xLogic’s booth.

4. 3xLogic – Wendi Burke described how the firm has grown to now offer a total solution that includes its flagship VIGIL Trends business intelligence software as well as cameras, NVRs and access control. She said the company is really focusing on providing integrators with ease of installation, and managed services and remote diagnostics to boost recurring revenue stream opportunities and combat commoditization. Be on the lookout for 3xLogic’s small thermal camera, which Burke says is due in December.

5. Milestone Systems – There was much fanfare at this booth, not just because of the market’s leading VMS but because CEO Lars Thinggaard was promoting and signing copies of his new book, “Business Magnetism: The Power of Partnership.” He said it took him six months of actual time to write the tome, which was interrupted by the firm’s IPO and then acquisition by Canon. He fast-tracked the project by dictating the general content before rolling up his sleeves and massaging the material into its final form, with the final two chapters being penned post-IPO/Canon. Thinggaard said the overall message of the book is to adopt the Scandinavian business approach of openness and encouraging all employees to challenge the status quo. Regarding the new Milestone under Canon, he said the business is operating independently and the recent addition of 15 more camera manufacturers to the VMS ecosystem is proof of that.

6. NVT/Phybridge – CEO John Croce was both exhausted and exhilarated by the roller coaster ride that has taken place since Canadian IP transmission products provider Phybridge announced it had acquired IP and PoE transmission products specialist Network Video Technologies (NVT) during ISC West last April. He said the transition is going exceedingly well and that the brand will now be known as NVT by Phybridge. Croce added that the interest level in the company’s Ethernet over coax CLEER switch has been overwhelming.

Napco integrates access, locking, intrusion, fire and video.

7. NAPCO Security Technologies – Judy Jones said the show’s high degree of corporate end users was a particularly good fit for the company’s Continental Access branded solutions. The enterprise class security platform integrates access, locking, intrusion, fire and video. She said the recently released CA3000 version 2.9 software not only provides robust access control functionality and seamless integration with alarms, locking and a growing list of video systems, but offers a host of many new sought-after features.

8. Canon USA – Scott Burkhardt demonstrated the imaging giant’s impressive low light capabilities with an in-booth demo while also showing off the manufacturer’s expanding range of surveillance cameras. He said although the recently acquired Axis Communications and Milestone Systems will remain independent within the corporate structure, the market should expect to see Canon increasing its concentration and effort in the video security space. Burkhardt explained how the firm will be growing its footprint well beyond its longtime foothold in the law enforcement surveillance realm. He stressed the high quality build and optics differentiate Canon’s products.

9. RGB Spectrum – John Henkel demonstrated its enterprise MCMS control room management platform, which has been ported to operate with its new MediaWall V processing architecture to make it fully 4K-enabled. He talked about widespread failings in the industry to capture 4K images yet display them on monitors incapable of fully rendering the rich detail afforded by the technology. Henkel also shared the launch of RBG’s new QuadView UHD multiviewer, a high-performance processor designed to display up to four sources simultaneously in a variety of layouts. Both products were exceptionally easy to use and interact with.

Other highlights from Day 1 included Hikvision’s packed industry partners mixer at Morton’s Steakhouse and Altronix hosting the trade media at Angels Stadium in a game in which the Angels defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-4.
