Fire Prevention Week Kicks Off Across the Country

Alarm dealers should reach out to existing and potentially new customers to make sure their fire/life-safety devices and systems are up to date.

Sunday marked the start of Fire Prevention Week, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is encouraging the public to install working smoke alarms in every bedroom of one’s house.

This year’s slogan is, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep,” as the NFPA says on its website that almost half of home fire deaths come in fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Smoke alarms should be “in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of your home, including the basement,” the NFPA says.

Fire Prevention Week, which wraps up Saturday, is a great opportunity for alarm dealers to reach out to customers — existing and new — to ensure all their fire/life-safety devices and systems are up to date.

Two counties in Virginia already have educational programs in place for Fire Prevention Week. Newsplex reports that Charlottesville and Albemarle County firefighters will be teaching fire safety lessons to kids across the country. The counties also have programs in place where homeowners can call the nearest fire department and have free smoke alarms delivered and installed for them.

“The bottom line is, smoke alarms save lives,” said Rich Jones, a member of the Charlottesville Fire Department, “and I know if there is a fire in my residence, I would want every opportunity for my family to get out safely.”

Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire back in 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 more homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres, according to the NFPA.
