Indiana to Delay Start of 317 Area Code’s 10-Digit Dialing

At the urging of the Electronic Security Association, state regulators are giving central Indiana residents who live in the 317 telephone area code one more month before they must begin using 10 digits when dialing.

INDIANAPOLIS – Here is a heads-up for installing security contractors and monitoring providers that do business in central Indiana. State regulators declared the deadline for 10-digit dialing has been extended by one month.

Residents in the 317 area code will now be required to dial 10 digits for local calls beginning Oct. 15. Ten-digit dialing was set to become mandatory in the 317 area code on Sept. 17

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission said it made the move after the Electronic Security Association (ESA) informed regulators that some home and business security alarm companies were behind in preparing for 10-digit dialing.

Commission members met with alarm company representatives to assess the scope of the situation.

Beginning Oct. 15, calls in the 317 area code made with only seven numbers will not be completed and a recording will instruct callers to hang up and dial again.
