Investigation Prompts Home Security Firm to Change Business Description

Pennsylvania officials plan to investigate Home Security Shield due to concerns over the firm’s marketing practices.

AMBRIDGE, Pa. – An investigation by a Pennsylvania newspaper has prompted Home Security Shield to change its purposes after the probe questioned the firm’s business practices.

Initially, Home Security Shield claimed to be a North Carolina-based home security company that sold alarm systems. However, a Times Online investigation revealed the firm was masquerading as a security firm and was actually based in Florida, inciting Beaver County State Rep. Rob Matzie to ask the State Attorney General Kathleen Kane for a more in depth investigation into the company.

In a letter to the attorney general, Matzie voiced his concerns about Home Security Shield’s marketing practices, and noted that it was “very difficult to find out any information about the validity of the company.”

Matzie decided to meet with the attorney general after Home Security Shield ranked Ambridge as the second-most-dangerous city in Pennsylvania using FBI Uniform Crime report data from 2012.

As the former mayor of Ambridge, Matzie noted that city officials are very transparent in the type of crime that occurs and was upset that Home Security Shield was damaging the city’s reputation in an effort to sell someone a product.

Home Security Shield has since changed its Web site, by eliminating all contact information and disconnecting a phone number that was listed on the Web site.

Additionally, at the bottom of HomeSecurityShield.org, company executives have placed a disclaimer saying that the company does not sell home security systems:

“HomeSecurityShield.org is not a home security provider,” the disclaimer written at the bottom of the website reads. “Rather, HomeSecurityShield.org is an informative website that evaluates, reviews and may recommend home security companies or features of a home security company.”

According to Times Online, the firm added the disclaimer the day after state representatives decided to investigate into the company’s marketing tactics.
