Lafayette Police Department Partners With Public Safety Corporation to Reduce False Alarms

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Lafayette Police Department is cracking down on its false alarm problem.

WLFI reports the department has partnered with the Public Safety Corporation for 2016 to cut back on the number of false alarm dispatches its police force responds to. The Public Safety Corporation uses CryWolf software.

“We saw an issue where we were going to thousands of alarm calls and 99.7 % of the alarm calls were false,” said Lt. Brian Gossard. “So that all takes a lot of time and resources from patrol officers.”

False alarms continue to be an issue for police forces across the nation. Many counties have required homes and businesses to register their alarm systems for a fee and implemented an escalating fee program to in an effort to cut down on false alarm dispatches. Lafayette is the latest.

The Public Safety Corporation will now handle ordinance violations issued to business and homeowners. The Lafayette Police Department had handled those since July 1.
