Less Than 30% of Households Know Where to Buy Smart Home Products and Services, Study Finds

Parks Associates published a research report that found retail outlets are the most common place for households to purchase smart home devices.

A research report found that less than 30% of U.S. broadband households know where they can purchase smart home products or services. On top of that, 40% of those households prefer to purchase smart home products at retail stores.

That can be taken one of two ways for security dealers: Either consumers prefer to buy smart home products at the store, or security professionals are not doing a good enough job of marketing their smart home services.

Home security providers rank second at 31%, followed by Internet service providers (23%) and pay-TV providers (12%).

“In addressing the low consumer awareness for smart home solutions, all players have ample opportunities to make inroads in this early market,” said Eddie Accomando, research analyst for Parks Associates, which conducted the study.

Additionally, the study found 24% of households plan to buy a smart lighting solution like light bulbs or smart in-wall outlets/switches. Also, 11% plan to buy a smart thermostat, while 9% currently own a smart thermostat and another 9% own smart lighting.

“To move the smart home from early adopters to the mass market, companies and industry players must address low consumer awareness,” Accomando said.
