Nest Releases Outdoor Security Camera Amid Change in Leadership

The Nest Cam Outdoor will be introduced this week roughly six weeks after founder and CEO Tony Fadell stepped down.

SAN FRANCISCO — There had been speculation back in June that Nest would release an outdoor security camera in light of the company’s transition in leadership. Now, it appears that time has come.

The Nest Cam Outdoor is the latest smart home offering for Nest, which will be introduced this week. The camera is a waterproof, rugged version of the Nest Cam. It also includes a mounting system with a magnet, as the New York Times explains.

The release of the Nest Cam Outdoor comes during a time of unrest at the company. Back on June 3, Nest Founder and CEO Tony Fadell stepped down after complaints related to his management style. As the Times reports, Greg Duffy — founder and former CEO of Dropcam, a security camera maker that Nest acquired — criticized Fadell and said that a number of Dropcam employees resigned because of Fadell.

However, Nest Director of Product Marketing Maxime Veron told the Times that the complaints of Fadell’s leadership are minimal and that the “majority of the Dropcam people are still at Nest, and they’re very happy here.”

Veron also says Fadell was a driving force behind the Nest Cam Outdoor, which will be released in the fall for $199.

On June 10, new CEO Marwan Fawaz told Nest employees that the company was not for sale.
