Pennsylvania Attorney General: Vision Security Misleads Consumers

Vision Security has agreed to pay a $30,000 fine after settling a claim with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office that the security firm used deceptive sales practices to gain new business.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Vision Security has settled claims made by the Pennsylvania Attorney’s General Office that the security firm misled consumers in an attempt to line up new business.

In its claims, the attorney general’s office accused Vision Security of violating the state’s consume protection law by committing “unfair or deceptive acts or practices” and/or engaging in “unfair methods of competition,” The Morning Call reports.

Sales representatives for the company allegedly told homeowners that their current home security provider was either going out of business or being sold to Vision Security. Company employees also claimed that they were affiliated with the homeowner’s current alarm company, and that the purpose for the visit was to upgrade the current security system.

Lastly, the settlement alleges that Vision Security reps said that if homeowners switched security companies, the firm would pay any cancellation fees.

Though Vision Security denied any wrongdoing, the firm settled the case by agreeing to pay a $30,000 fine and $5,000 to the attorney generals public protection and education fund. The security company also agreed to ensure its sales reps identify themselves, uses clear contracts and doesn’t mislead customers.

The attorney general’s office said Vision Security cooperated with the investigation and resolved customers’ complaints by canceling contracts.

The settlement allows Pennsylvania customers who signed contracts with Vision Security on or after Jan. 1, 2014, to cancel their contracts at no cost.
