Pennsylvania Casino Gets $2.8M Video Surveillance System Upgrade

The Meadows Racetrack and Casino replaced its analog system with a digital system equipped with high-definition cameras.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Doug Harbach, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, did not sugarcoat his words when describing the security system in place at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino: “This is the worst place to commit a crime.”

Harbach is referring to the new video surveillance system that was recently installed at the casino. The Meadows upgraded to a digital system with high-definition cameras, ditching their outdated analog system that had been in place since the casino opened in 2009. The surveillance system upgrade cost $2.8 million, according to a report by Tribune-Review..

The casino has 1,250 video surveillance cameras that are monitored by a team of 24 employees, noticing something as small as a woman leaving her purse at a slot machine or spotting a guest attempting to steal chips.

Tim Timko, Meadows’ surveillance director, calls his team “bloodhounds” because they track down the necessary people. “Our whole job is to protect the assets of this casino and of the commonwealth,” Timko said.

Here is an excerpt from the report:

On Thursday, five surveillance operators sat in a remote room off limits to nearly all employees. Each sat before three computer monitors and a bank of four 50-inch screens on a wall that can show up to 12 security cameras at once.

A man in a blue shirt won $6,000 at a slot machine on one screen, while another showed a man double his stack of eight $25 chips at a blackjack table on consecutive hands, winning a quick $400. A moment later, an overhead angle on a third screen showed another player rolling dice along the right side of a craps table, and a fourth watched as an indecisive roulette player finally placed a $5 chip on number 29.
