Saugerties PD to Install License Plate Readers Throughout City

The New York Division of Criminal Justice Services has given the Saugerties Police Department a $50,000 grant to install two fixed license plate readers with cameras in the village.

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – The Saugerties Police Department will install two fixed license plate readers with cameras in the village in an effort to combat crime.

The department received a $50,000 grant from New York State’s Division of Criminal Justice Services to purchase the two readers.

The devices are equipped with cameras to allow dispatchers at police headquarters to snap a picture of a vehicle to help authorities locate a missing person for an amber alert, stolen vehicles and automobiles used in the commission of a crime, Saugerties Times reports.

License plate numbers of vehicles sought by police will be sent directly to the readers. If the devices detect the suspected vehicle, they will automatically sound an alarm.

Authorities declined to say where the readers will be installed; however, they mentioned that the devices will be up and running by July 1.
