Security System Uses Facial Recognition, Tricks Burglars Into Thinking Someone’s Home

The BuddyGuard Flare security system can trick intruders into thinking someone is home by making sounds such as dishes being washed in the kitchen.

BuddyGuard, a Berlin-based startup company, has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to launch a security system that features facial recognition technology.

The solution, which has been named Flare, features an HD camera, motion detector, accelerometer, temperature sensor, microphone, radar, speaker, siren and facial recognition software, Daily Mail reports.

The device has been designed to discreetly attach to a wall, giving the HD camera inside the solution a 170-degree view of the room. Flare can also connect to a homeowner’s mobile phone using the BuddyGuard app.

Users can program Flare to recognize their face and voice, as well as people allowed in their home while the family is away on vacation. The device will automatically turn its camera and microphone off if it recognizes a homeowner’s face. It will turn back again on if it sees someone that its database doesn’t recognize..

If Flare does not recognize a person in the home, the device will start making sounds, such as dishes being washed in the kitchen or people talking, to trick an intruder into thinking that someone is home.

The security system can also sound an alarm while calling the homeowner or the police in an effort to stop a burglary, according to BuddyGuard.

If a break-in does occur, Flare will record everything that it “sees.” The device will back up images to an encrypted online database allowing authorities to access the images and identify a burglar – even if intruders destroy the camera.

And what about pesky false alarms? The company claims that Flare recognizes the shape of pets, so animals won’t trigger the alarms.

The BuddyGuard app also allows users to monitor and manage home security remotely.

The BuddyGuard Flare is currently available to pre-order on Kickstarter for $229 with an estimated delivery date of December.
