SIA’s 2006 Government Sales and Marketing Summit Draws 100+

WASHINGTON

The Security Industry Association (SIA) hosted its 2006 Government Sales and Marketing Summit at The Melrose Hotel in Washington, D.C., June 12-14. The event drew a record audience of more than 100 SIA members and security professionals representing both private and public sectors. Summit Attendees participated in a series of keynote and interactive panel discussions throughout the three-day conference.

Richard Haass, former director of policy planning for the Department of State, provided the Summit’s opening keynote address. Now the president of the Council for Foreign Relations, Haass drew upon his experience in the foreign relations arena to extend a unique perspective on world terrorism and U.S. diplomatic relations with other nations.

The Networking and Public Policy Dinner, held on Tuesday, June 13 at Clyde’s in Washington, D.C.., welcomed U.S. Congressmen Dan Burton and Curt Weldon. Congressman Weldon provided his perspective toward the war on terror and the events of 9/11 to dinner attendees. Weldon pledged to work with SIA to convene a Congressional briefing on issues related to implementation of HSPD-12 and FIPS-201. Congressman Burton described many of the foreign policy challenges facing the United States while pledging to work with SIA on legislation to augment the Cooperative Purchasing Program.

On June 14, Mui Erkun, chief of staff for the Chief Procurement Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), talked about DHS’ overall structure and operations. In addition to directing participants to many online resources, Erkun strongly encouraged companies to proactively approach government buyers and work with prime contractors through the DHS Mentor-Protégé Program.

All Summit registrants were offered the opportunity to meet with their respective representatives in Congress following the close of the Summit on Wednesday, June 14. According to SIA, attendees found these Capitol Hill meetings to be extremely positive, productive and beneficial to all concerned.
