String of Break-ins Reveals Storage Facility’s Lack of Security

A storage facility is in hot water after customers learned that the security services they were paying for were not in place when their storage units were broken into.

WYOMING, Mich. – A Michigan storage facility is in hot water after several break-ins at the property revealed advertised security was not in place despite customers paying for the service.

Storage Pros advertised 24-hour video surveillance and other security services on its Web site, 24 Hour News 8 reports.

However, customers learned that the services were not in place when intruders broke into seven storage units on July 11 and 12.

Mark Rowlander, a customer whose storage unit was broken into, asked the facility’s employees if he could look at surveillance footage to see how thieves were able to break into his unit. An employee then informed him that the company’s security cameras have not been in operation since a tornado caused damage to the facility in July 2014.

When Rowlader asked when the cameras would be fixed, he claims he got no response.

Rowlander then contacted 24 Hour News 8, which sent reporters to the facility and was able to walk right in because the front gate was missing. A sign on the fence read “Sorry for the inconvenience due to storm damage.”

When questioned about the lack of security, a Storage Pros manager repeatedly told reporters that the incident was a corporate issue.

Reporters later received a call from Storage Pros owner Robert Calkins, who blamed the insurance company for the delay in getting the security measures back in place.

Days later, Calkins installed a new security gate and ordered new security cameras, 24 Hours News 8 reports.

Storage Pros has since removed the information about security measures from its Web site.
