System Sensor Releases White Paper on System-Connected CO Detectors
ST. CHARLES, Ill.
System Sensor, a manufacturer of fire detection and notification products, has released a white paper on system-connected carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to remind security dealers, installers and distributors that CO system notification appliance circuits are more reliable when they adhere to UL’s life-safety supervision requirements.
The document, titled “Eliminating Confusion: The Limited Life of Carbon Monoxide Detectors,” explains when and why system-connected CO detectors need to be replaced.
A supervised CO detector offers constant monitoring of the odorless, deadly gas; however, CO gas sensors within a detector have a finite life span. When the sensor reaches its end of life (EOL) in compliance with UL regulations, the entire detector must be replaced.
UL requires every system-connected detector to indicate the CO gas sensor’s EOL by using an integral trouble relay that sends the EOL signal to the control panel. While all connected CO detectors have a limited-life gas sensor, not all of the detectors have the capability to send the gas sensor’s EOL signal to the control panel.
“We wrote this paper because we wanted to emphasize the difference between system-connected CO detectors and system-connected smoke detectors,” says Richard Roberts, senior product manager for the System Sensor security business unit. “We wanted to get the word out so that expired CO detectors get replaced. When it comes to carbon monoxide, we want to make sure people have a true sense of security and know that these products are functioning the way they should be.”
