Top 5 Surveillance Videos of the Week: Prison Guards Drag Inmate With Broken Neck

Other videos include an elderly woman being tricked by a saleswoman and a Donald Trump supporter’s home being attacked.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Video footage from a prison here is at the center of a trial involving the accused misconduct of an inmate with a broken neck by two officers back in 2011.

In the video surveillance, two officers can be seen dragging Eugene Gruber through the halls of Lake County Jail. It later was found that Gruber had been in paralysis for 24 hours before he was finally taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken neck. The following spring, Gruber died in a rehabilitation facility.

The Chicago Tribune reports Gruber suffered his injuries when he was pepper-sprayed by guards and was taken down for “combative behavior in a shower area when he was being brought into the jail after a disorderly conduct arrest.”

At the center of the controversy is whether or not the two officers — Rodney Holmes and Robert Schlesser — should have known Gruber was in need of medical attention when he could not sit or stand, prompting the guards to drag him through the hallway to be photographed. A doctor that testified in the trial said the officers should have known Gruber was not “faking it.” Holmes is still being charged, but Schlesser died of natural causes prior to the trial.
