Urbandale, Iowa, Targets False Fire Alarms

URBANDALE, Iowa—The city council of Urbandale, Iowa, in conjunction with the city’s fire department, has introduced an given its initial approval of an ordinance that would charge residents and businesses for four or more false alarms within a year.

The ordinance came about due to a large number of false alarms during an eight-month period. Volunteer firefighters were devoting time and resources responding to false alarms.

In the ordinance, an offender would pay $100 after the fourth false. After the seventh offense, the fine jumps to $200, but the city will waive the fee if the system is repaired within 10 days.
