UTC Separates Climate, Controls & Security Unit as Standalone Business

The realignment comes less than two years after UTC combined Otis Elevator with Carrier and its former Fire & Security division.

HARTFORD, Conn. – United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX.N) announced this week it would operate its Otis Elevator and climate controls and security divisions as standalone units. The realignment comes less than two years after UTC combined Otis Elevator with Carrier and UTC’s former Fire & Security division into one business, Building & Industrial Systems (BIS).

Otis, which has lagged other UTC business units this year, will now stand alone and the rest of the units will be called Climate Controls & Security (CCS).

The company appointed Philippe Delpech president of Otis. He previously serviced as COO for the combined BIS division with responsibility for Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Robert McDonough was named president of the CCS unit, which includes brands such as Chubb security systems and Carrier air conditioners. McDonough had been serving as COO of the Americas for BIS.

Delpech and McDonough will report directly to UTC President and CEO Gregory Hayes. In a press release, Hayes said the businesses needed to have better focus on their respective specialties in order to expand their markets in the developing world, where rising wealth means more people buying air conditioning and more tall buildings with elevators.

“By creating clear lines of authority and accountability, this new organizational structure better positions Otis and CCS to capitalize on these opportunities with our innovative, energy-efficient products,” Hayes said.

UTC BIS President and CEO Geraud Darnis, who announced his retirement in July, will continue with UTC through January 2016.
