Video Surveillance Cameras Coming to School Buses in Texas School District

The cameras allow bus drivers to focus on the road instead of maintaining safety and order on the bus.

GUNTER, Texas — Video surveillance cameras are coming to school buses here, joining other school districts in the area.

Three new buses in the Gunter Independent School District will have two video surveillance cameras mounted on the ceiling. The district’s other 13 buses will have similar equipment installed later this year.

Gunter ISD Superintendent Jill Siler said on buses with 60-70 kids, a high level of safety and security is important so they can pull video footage if something were to happen, according to a report by the Herald Democrat.

Randy Taylor, Denison Independent School District director of transportation, agrees. “Every bus has disruptive students who don’t want to follow the rules and they have to face the consequences.

“I get calls from a set of parents that say, so-and-so hit my kid first and my kid wasn’t doing anything. Then the other set of parents call and say the same thing,” he continued. “We look at the video and it shows us one student sitting in their seat while the other one jumps over the seat and wails on him.”

Sherman Independent School District has equipped school buses with security cameras since 1994, according to the report. It has enabled bus drivers to focus on the road while the cameras can keep an eye on children behavior.
