Video Surveillance Helps Police Catch Serial Burglars in 3 States

Video surveillance cameras have helped police in Albuquerque, N.M., Bountiful, Utah, and Miami arrest several individuals suspected of serial burglaries.

Video surveillance is being credited for helping police arrest serial burglars in three states.

In Bountiful, Utah, authorities arrested three men who have been linked to as many as 33 burglaries in the area since October 2014.

Known as the “pillowcase bandits,” Joe Hernandez, 51; his son Isaac Hernandez, 26; and friend Thomas Blymiller, 25; are suspected of breaking into homes and, typically, going straight to the bedroom and using the homeowners’ pillowcases and laundry baskets to carry out jewelry and other electronics, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

The three men were identified in a March 21 burglary recorded by a neighbor’s home surveillance video by a woman who provided them rent a neighbor’s home surveillance video by a woman who provided them rent Standard Examiner reports.

Meanwhile, in Miami, police arrested Eric Brand, 44, after he was seen on surveillance video burglarizing a home in April, NBC Miami reports.

Brand is charged with three burglaries in the Westchester area as well as battery on a law enforcement officer. It is believed that he is responsible for more home burglaries in the area.

The Albuquerque Police Department arrested Anthony Chavez, 24, on May 22. Chavez has been accused of robbing several homes in the city in April, including a home near the Veteran’s Affair Hospital.

Chavez was home armed during his alleged intrusion, KRQE News 13 reports.

Video surveillance from the homeowners’ security systems helped police to recognize the suspect, officers said.

Some Albuquerque residents have increased video surveillance in their areas in the wake of a string of burglaries in the area.

For example, Alan Swain, who has eight security cameras around his duplex plans to add eight more cameras, which will operate 24/7, around his home, KRQE News 13 reports.

His surveillance cameras have captured a man stealing tires off a truck, someone attempting to steal a car, people doing drugs and others stealing items.

Swain hopes to partner with his neighbors and together line a whole alley with cameras to deter criminals.
