Wichita City Council Seeks to Reduce False Alarms

New ordinance would make alarm users responsible for registering with the city instead of security companies.

WICHITA, Kan. — The city council here is considering amending it alarm ordinance to make sure first responders only go to real emergencies.

Wichita police and fire crews respond to more than 18,000 false alarms annually, or almost 50 a day, reports.

To combat false alarms, the new ordinance would make alarm users responsible for registering their alarms with the city, a task that security companies typically perform. By implementing this change, city officials believe they will have more details on individual situations.

Additionally, if a home or business has more than seven or more false alarms in a 12-month period, police and fire service would be suspended.

The current schedule of fines for false alarms would remain intact.
