Dubai Police Credit Smart Home Security for Zero Thefts in 2018

Police held a press conference to boast the success of its home security program, which promotes the installation of security cameras that work in tandem with smart sensors connected to satellites.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Call it “Dubious in Dubai” but police here reportedly claim a comprehensive smart home security program put into practice for vacationing residents has resulted in no confirmed house thefts so far this year.

The UAE may stand as one of the richest countries in the world — no doubt there is plenty of booty to entice a burglar to plunder — but that’s an astounding assertion reported by the Khaleej Times with no additional supporting information.

Nonetheless, police recently boasted the success of its home security program, which promotes the installation of security cameras that work in tandem with smart sensors connected to satellites.

Under the free program, residents can download the Dubai Police smart app to register for the home security service and enter details such as home location and the time of travel so that police can send patrols to check on their homes or dispatch to alarm events.

During a July 11 press conference, Lt. Col. Rashid Abdul Rahman bin Zabawi Al Falasi, director of Criminal Investigation Department, said the home security program is witnessing a strong demand from citizens as well as expat residents.

The number of residences registered under the program increased by 35% this year compared to 2017. Police say their aim is to reach 50% by the end of the year. Even if homeowners fail to register before their travel time, they can complete it from their home country or country of visit by contacting a call center.

Al Falasi emphasized taking people’s privacy into consideration, since police received some complaints from residents. “The system of the program has got the cameras on the entrances only, and the sensors are connected to satellites, so we as officers won’t see what is going inside homes,” he said via the Gulf Today.

“We need to educate people that merging our lives using such smart applications and artificial intelligence is to ease our lives and continue to ensure safety in Dubai, considering it is one of the most secure cities in the world, with less crimes and accidents,” he added.
