Engineered Protection Systems Engineers Protection Perfection

Learn how Engineered Protection Systems earned the 2014 Central Station Alarm Association Five Diamond Marketing MARVEL Award.

Aspiring to excellence is a good thing. Achieving it is a great thing. Since its inception in 1955, Engineered Protection Systems Inc. (EPS) has continued to grow, and meet and exceed standards. A CSAA Five Diamond certified station for a decade now, EPS sought and earned the distinction in 2004, just one year after the Central Station Alarm Association established the program, and has remained committed to keeping it ever since. So committed, in fact, that the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based security provider and central station operator took home the 2014 CSAA Five Diamond Marketing Marvel Award.

Conducted in partnership with Security Sales & Integration and evaluated by an independent panel of judges, the Marketing Marvel Award recognizes and honors firms that:

  • Leverage their CSAA Five Diamond distinction to better position themselves in the central station monitoring market
  • Inspire other certified firms to market their Five Diamond advantage
  • Increase awareness of the Five Diamond program throughout the industry
  • Elevate the profiles of Five Diamond firms for their professionalism to mainstream media and the general public

EPS has effectively and consistently worked to meet those objectives. As David Hood, EPS’ director of business development explains, “We felt we were able to pivot the Five Diamond Certification effectively through marketing. It’s a continued work in progress, but we like the way the distinction fits with EPS Security’s customer-facing narrative.”

Let’s scratch below the surface to find out how EPS positioned itself for this year’s special distinction. Congratulations also go to first runner-up FE Moran Security Solutions of Champaign, Ill., which is also profiled in a sidebar.

EPS’ Epic Journey

Keeping the business local and customer-focused is a formula that’s worked well for this soon to be 60-year-old company. Now in its second generation of leadership, EPS ranks among the country’s largest security providers. It has grown what began as a modest, local operation with a handful of employees into a multistate company serving the residential, commercial and enterprise systems markets.

EPS specializes in intrusion, fire alarm, access control, video surveillance and integrated systems, and places a strong emphasis on service. Its operation spans some 205 employees, five branch offices in addition to its Grand Rapids corporate office and central station, a fleet of trucks driven by more than 100 techs, and a customer base of 19,000+ accounts.

While EPS has more than doubled in size during the past decade, it is not a huge national company, nor does it aspire to be. “We want to be known as the local provider,” Hood points out. “Service is what we emphasize with our customers. CSAA, an instrumental part of our industry, has helped us stay in the forefront. Through their sharing of best practices, they keep us on top of our game.” And that’s exactly what the certification is designed to do.
