ONVIF Adds Physical Access Control to Forum

April 15, 2010 | Comments (1) | Post a comment

ONVIF (The Open Network Video Interface Forum) announced it plans to extend its scope to include physical access control systems.

The forum said its expanded scope aims to standardize communication between access control devices and ensure interoperability between network video products and access control systems.

The new extension enables system integrators to design integrated solutions based on best-of-breed products from different vendors, according to ONVIF administrators.

“Since its foundation in 2008, ONVIF has taken major steps towards its goal to achieve global interoperability for network video devices,” says Jonas Andersson, Axis Communications, chairman of ONVIF Steering Committee. “By extending the ONVIF scope to include access control systems, we now take a step further to facilitate the integration of IP-based security and safety devices using a global open standard.”

As a result of the expansion, ONVIF has changed its rules of membership. ONVIF members can now choose the membership scope depending on the technical area(s) they want to participate in. Thus, a member can either choose to remain a network video member or extend their membership to include access control systems.
