ALEXANDRIA, Va. — All phases of project lifecycle management, including costs, stakeholders and risk management will be discussed during the Security Industry Association's (SIA) Certified Security Project Manager (CSPM) program.
SIA will hold 11 courses throughout North America from March to October. The four-day class will instruct trainees in the terms and applications of security systems as they relate to access control, video systems (CCTV) and Internet Protocol (IP). The courses in Canada are offered in conjunction with the Canadian Security Association.
Past CSPM courses has been well received by attendees, including Program Manager Kevin Hincks of Simplex Grinnell Canada. Hincks, who enrolled in the program in May 2010, says the course uses real-life examples to help students apply the basic principles.
"I've been involved in project management for the past 10 years and have a project management certificate from Simon Fraser University," says Hincks. "I got more from the four-day CSPM course than I did from the 12-week course taught at the college."
The 2011 course schedule is listed below:
- March 26-29: Montreal
- April 3-6: Las Vegas
- May 15-18: Monroe, N.C.
- May 25-28: Calgary, Alberta

A skilled project manager is key to make any endeavor successful, Intelligent Access Systems (IAS) President Ron Oetjen tells SSI. Oetjen, who saw his business' growth rate increase by 240 percent in three years, relies heavily on his project manager when dealing with complex installations.
"The No. 1 component when training project managers is making sure that they understand the job," he says. "A big part of the job is documenting what's going on during the project and being prepared for that day that something doesn't go well. It's so important for the person to understand the scope of work they're being asked to do."
