Cisco to Cut 6,500 Jobs, Plans to Refocus on Routing & Switching Business

July 19, 2011 | Comments (10) | Post a comment

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In an effort to trim more than $1 billion in annual costs and increase profit growth, Cisco Systems will cut 6,500 jobs or 9 percent of its workforce.

Roughly, 2,100 employees opted to take an early retirement package, while the remainder will be laid off, Bloomberg reports. Cisco expects to save $1.3 billion with $750 million to be recorded in the 2011 fourth quarter. The remainder will be booked in fiscal 2012.

The company also plans to sell its plant in Juarez, Mexico, to Foxconn Technology Group. Cisco acquired the site in 2006 from Scientific-Atlanta Inc. The company does not anticipate any job losses from the sale, although the 5,000 workers at the plant will be transferred to other positions.

With shares for the company dropping 24 percent this year, a rumor spread last week that the company would cut 10,000 jobs. Alkesh Shah, an analyst at Evercore Partners, stated that Cisco realized it needed to lower costs as the market becomes more competitive, Bloomberg reports.

The layoffs are part of an effort by Cisco's CEO John Chambers to refocus the business on its main routing and switching business. Its rivals - Juniper Networks and Hewlett Packard - have experienced increases in market share, while Cisco has declined.

They are already showing profits and with the state of our unemployment they should hold off on the layoffs and advise their employees to look for other jobs and not back fill them as they become vacant. Lets not add to the problem. Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page

Do we know they didn't do this? Reportedly 2100 have accepted early retirement (included in this number)... Companies can't just hang on to employees because it's nice to do... Look how well that's worked out for our government budgets. Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page

right, heaven forbid a company care about its employees, it is all about profit..as a business man i understand that however our country was founded on helping each other in times of struggle not cutting our losses..sorry this way of thinking irritates me. Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page

i too understand it. as Ed aptly points out, the slogan of solidarity - "every man for himself". I'm also of the opinion that business hurts (as well as the country) over the long run. No big deal for a kingpin looking to score and get out. But loyalty cuts both ways, you can't breed a loyal employee when they're fully aware they'll be cut out like a cancer as soon as the bottom line shrinks. Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page

We live with a struggling economy. Hard decisions must be made. Our success depends on how we respond to adversities, what lifestyle adjustments we can make and the extent of our determination to personally succeed. It's time to re-invent ourselves, set goals and work hard to achieve them. However, the sad side, for various good reasons out of their control, so many are unable to pull together the resources needed to make change happen. They are dependent on "others". And now there are less "others" out there to help. Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page

not sure what the "dependent on others" comment means. As a business owner, I too am dependent on qualified, well trained help. Often it is our insatiable appetite for more (share holders included) that drives these decisions. Someone needs to lead (not government) in the direction that we can be profitable and still care for our brothers and sisters. I guess if you were lost in the woods, you'd make the "sad side choice" to leave mom behind in order to save yourself Ed?

Just proves the dent Juniper & HP has cut into Cisco market share. We have seen this happen time an time again by industry leaders. The fighting spirit to Stay on top cannot be match by those in 2nd or 3rd climbing up the hill. With all the talent they have (had) No one saw this coming? I'm sure the Share Holders were questioning this 18 - 24 months ago. I was... Comment via SSI's LinkedIn page
