ALEXANDRIA, Va. — During the Security Week Gala at this week's ISC Solutions, the Security Industry Association (SIA) and the InterPort Police honored two influential members of the security industry. Held at Chelsea Pier 61, SIA presented Tri-Ed/Northern Video CEO Steven Roth with the George R. Lippert Memorial Award. Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), received the Fred V. Morrone Memorial 9/11 Award from InterPort Police.
The Lippert Award recognizes outstanding contributions to SIA and the security industry. Each year's honoree is selected by a panel of past winners. During his acceptance speech, Roth, who is a SSI Hall of Fame inductee, expressed appreciation in witnessing the growth of the industry.
"The good part of all this is, I've been very fortunate to be part of an industry that's been transformed by both technology and very talented people," he said.
Meanwhile, InterPort Police bestowed the Morrone award to Napolitano for her leadership efforts to protect the country from threats that range from terrorism to natural disasters. As the DHS's third secretary, Napolitano is credited for forging new partnerships with international allies. Additionally, she has expanded information sharing with federal, state and local law enforcement, which helped to create a collaborative effort to detect and disrupt threats early on.
"As I take this award home, I'm going to accept it on behalf of the 240,000 men and women of the DHS," Napolitano said. "They're really the ones that should receive it; they are the ones whose work you are honoring. They are the ones who are waking up every morning thinking about how to keep the country safe, and going to bed at night thinking how to make it even safer."
