SAN FRANCISCO — During the California Alarm Association's (CAA) Winter Convention here, Dr. Shane Clary, vice president of Codes and Standards Compliance for Pacheco, Calif.-based Bay Alarm, received the George A. Weinstock Award for lifetime achievement and service to the security industry.
For more than 30 years, Clary, who pens SSI's "Fire Side Chat" column, has served the industry in numerous capacities. Among his current affiliations, he is chair of the Western Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (WBFAA) Unilateral Apprenticeship and Training Committee; vice chair of the Electronic Security Association (ESA) Fire Committee; and chair of the NFPA 72 Technical Committee.
State Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover, who served as a featured guest presenter at the formal award ceremony on Dec. 9, spoke in depth about the significance of her years-long working relationship with Clary. In particular, she commented that Clary — who is lauded for his encyclopedic retention of industry codes and standards — has been a vital resource for her own edification, as well as providing trusted guidance for the industry and the state.
"Shane has kept us on the straight and narrow and gave us common sense," Hoover said. "I wouldn't be standing here as state fire marshal without my friendship with him."
The George A. Weinstock Award was established in 1999 as the highest honor bestowed by the association. SSI Editor-in-Chief Scott Goldfine interviewed Clary in September for an installment of the "Security Speaking" podcast series. You can listen to their discussion here.
