Carbon monoxide (CO) is a leading cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the United States. Each year, nonfire-related CO poisoning is responsible for about 15,000 emergency department visits and nearly 500 deaths, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were more than 68,000 CO exposures reported to poison centers during 2000-2009. The following charts include related CO data during the same period from the National Poison Data System (NPDS).
