Citizens of Tennessee and Puerto Rico are now protected by the most current editions of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) safety codes, the NFPA announced. Tennessee recently adopted NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code (UFC), as did Puerto Rico, which also adopted NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.
UFC establishes reasonable levels of fire safety and property protection to safeguard people and property against fire and danger explosions in new and existing buildings. The Life Safety Code creates building design construction, operation and maintenance requirements to protect building occupants from fire, smoke and toxic fumes.
Both codes are part of the “Comprehensive Consensus Codes,” a full-set of construction codes developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Tennessee code enforcers participated in NFPA training covering UFC’s requirements in March, and NFPA’s Latin American professional development partner, IFST, will offer seminars on the two codes in Puerto Rico.
Additionally, NFPA will translate the latest editions of NFPA 1 and 101 into Spanish.
