Vermont Law Requires Hard-Wired CO Detectors

BURLINGTON, Vt.

October 12, 2007 | Comments (0) | Post a comment
A new Vermont law is requiring all apartments and condos to have hard-wired carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. The use of battery-operated CO detectors in the dwellings will no longer meet law requirements.

WCAX-TV in Burlington, Vt., reported that electricians are scrambling as condo associations and landlords are rushing to comply with the law, which went into effect Oct. 1.

Several laws were created after a student from the University of Vermont died from carbon monoxide poisoning in 2005. The odorless gas — referred to as the silent killer — has been responsible for 16 deaths in Vermont over the past 15 years.
