NBFAA School Modernization Language Passes House Committee

IRVING, Texas

The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) has taken another step toward securing congressional approval of its life safety alarm installation language for colleges. The House Committee on Education and Labor passed H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, in late July.

The $2.5 billion bill will provide funding for modernizing community colleges, including the installation of fire/life-safety alarms, constructing new facilities as well as renovating existing facilities.

The bill, which is authorized for fiscal year 2011, beginning October 2010, is required to pass the House before heading to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

NBFAA President Mike Miller urges integrators to get involved with local legislators in support of the bill.

“We believe that this will be a great member benefit and we look forward to this passage down the road,” Miller tells SSI. “The more input that the legislatures can hear from their members in the constituencies, the more helpful it will be.”

In May, the NBFAA successfully placed language in H.R. 2187, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act, which provides grants to renovate public school facilities and bring them into compliance with various safety codes.

The bill includes professional installation of fire/life-safety alarms and authorizes $6.4 billion over five years. The grants, which would go to local K-12 school, is still pending action in the HELP committee.
