Fire Officials: CO Incidents Doubled Since 2003

There were an estimated 80,100 carbon monoxide (CO) incidents in 2010, nearly double the 40,900 reports in 2003, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Most of the problems occur in the five-month period from October through February when residents seal up their homes and use alternative heating methods. In 2010, 60% of CO incidents happened during this time interval, reports Journal News.

CO threats include gas furnaces, water heaters and fireplaces. Because CO is the leading cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the United States, fire officials encourage more homeowners to install CO detectors, especially during the months when more residents stay inside.
