HONOLULU — As the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit draws near, police here want to install an undetermined number of video surveillance cameras.

Officials will ask the city council to approve a motion to authorize camera installation throughout Oahu, during an Aug. 30 meeting, The Republic reports. City funds will pay for the cameras, according to police.

The cameras will beef up security for the 21 heads of state who will attend November's summit. Officials expect more than 20,000 people to attend the event.

APEC is the premier Asia-Pacific economic forum. It supports economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.
